The British Debate website was created in 1999 to act as a central information and communication facility for the student debating community in Britain (and Ireland).
It is designed and administered by Square Eye Ltd, a London-based web consultancy, but relies on volunteer contributions from many debaters, coaches and tournament organisers.
The most popular elements of the site are the Calendar, which lists dates and details for the programme of Inter-Varsity debating competitions which are held weekly throughout the academic year, the Results section which features reports on competition finals and full results as soon as they are available, and the Mailing Lists, the most active of which has several hundred members engaged in regular dialogue. An extensive Resource section includes many handbooks and other learning materials.
The users of the site include British university students and schoolchildren, former debaters in many professions, teachers, and many interested observers from around the world. Contributors include former and current university debaters offering advice for new debating societies, staff at the English-Speaking Union and other organisations around the world, and adults evaluating the benefits of the skills they learnt as debaters.
