This September we will be running a road show of workshops around the country. Open to any school taking part in the upcoming championship, they cost £50 per school, for which you can bring up to five students (perhaps your first team and your reserve team) and as many staff as you wish. If you got knocked out in the first round of last year’s competitions, the sessions are free! If you’re interested in attending a road show workshop, choose the one closest to you from the list of locations and dates below, and select it during your online entry or fill in the box on the paper form. If you’ve already entered the competitions, it isn’t too late to apply for a road show workshop too — just e-mail centre@esu.org.
The 2008 road show dates and locations:
- 22 September: Durham and Dartmouth House, London
- 23 September: York
- 24 September: Nottingham
- 25 September: Southampton
- 26 September: Exeter
- 29 September: Canterbury
- 30 September: Dartmouth House, London
We also offer Continuing Professional Development days for teachers in different aspects of the competitions.
- Friday 3 October: Introduction to Public Speaking -- covers everything you need to know to train a team for the Schools Public Speaking Competition and to use it as an effective tool for promoting oracy in a classroom setting.
- Monday 6 October: Introduction to Debating -- covers the basics of debate, including the format and skills involved, how to use debate within the curriculum and a brief look at how to assess them in the classroom.
- Monday 13 October: Advanced Debating -- takes a more in-depth look at how to coach a successful debate team for a variety of different formats including British Parliamentary, and places a particular focus on judging.
All the courses run from 9.30am to 4.00pm and include a buffet lunch for all participants. The cost of each session is £100 per participant, inclusive of VAT. You can also book ESU staff to run CPD days for you and colleagues in your school. Visit Discover Your Voice for more information on these and other training opportunities available throughout the year.
