Pros and Cons: a debater’s handbook

National Public Speaking Competition UK Final 2004 video
This video comprises the presentations of the nine teams regional champions present at the national finals day. The range of topics covered is diverse, ranging from ‘GM crops’ through ‘Terrorism’ to ‘The nature of footballers as role models’. The winning team, Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls, presented the topic “Phone tapping is often necessary to ensure national security”.
These presentations were recorded at the UK Final at the City of London Girls School. The video is accompanied by teaching notes and analysis by Roger Tilbury, Chairman of the ESU Public Speaking Committee.

British Parliamentary video – the Cambridge Union Schools Finals Day 2003
This video offers an opportunity to view three debates in British Parliamentary style. The twenty top teams from the Cambridge Union Schools Competition debate each other over one day in Cambridge, and the three debates that took place in the Union Chamber itself over the course of the day were recorded by the ESU. The three motions included on the video are: “This House believes that the USA should stop giving military aid to Israel”, “This house would ban infant male circumcision” and “This House would ban extremist political parties”.
The video is accompanied by teaching notes and analysis by Alastair Endersby, former coach of the England Schools Debating Team.

World Schools video – England v South Africa 2003
This video offers a resource in the ‘World Schools’ debate format. The World Schools style involves three speakers per side, each giving an eight minute speech, with one also giving a four minute summary. This video shows a debate between the England and South Africa on the motion “This House would use sporting boycotts for political purposes”, filmed in Markham College, Lima, Peru. The video is accompanied by teaching notes and analysis by James Acton, current coach of the England Schools Debating Team.

Please note that these videos all come on VHS cassettes. The most recent finals of the England Schools Mace and the National Public Speaking Competition will be available from September on VCD (playable on most computers or DVD players). Check back here in the autumn for more information.
