Kenneth Harris, founder of the Mace, dies
We were very sorry to learn of the death, on 24 June, of Kenneth Harris CBE, former Chairman of The Observer and founder of the Mace debating competitions for schools and universities.
Kenneth's importance in developing competitive debate in this country cannot be overstated; he was also the chair of the US Debating Tour Selection Panel for many years, and oversaw the administrative transfer of the Maces to the English-Speaking Union when the sale of The Observer put them in danger of extinction.
Our commiserations to his family and great thanks to Kenneth for everything he did for British debate. Those interested can read his obituary (by Will Hutton) in The Observer.
